As we're thinking of walks to do with kids, the other side of the coin is walks which aren't a good idea.

The following are walks we've done which would NOT be recommended for any children including babies in carriers and ours reasons why.

This is by no means a complete list; if you do a walk and feel unsafe in any way then turn back; it would also be handy if you'd let us know if we need to add it to this list!

Tararuas:
Pretty much most walks in the Tararua Ranges other than those listed. Why? They're mostly steep, slippery and a lot of routes rather than tracks, not young child friendly material. There's a lot of diversions around slips and washouts which usually involve scrambling. Unless you have a lot of tramping experience and are well equipped it's generally a place to avoid.

Specifically:
- Waiopehu Track - too much scrambling to make it safe coming back down.
- Ohau Gorge Track is do-able but there's a few washed out areas where you have to jump over gaps in the track.

Ruahines:
Wharite Peak track - it's a scramble up and a scramble down.

Kapiti Coast:
Paekakariki Escarpment Track. Why? It's on a very narrow track along a cliff with a vertiginous drop down to state highway 1 below, exposed to wind which adds to the fun of trying to stay on the track and not plummet to your death...
