Coppermine Creek Track:
Approximate time: 2hrs return (1:30 return to creek crossing)
Location:
Approx 10km from Woodville, Eastern Ruahine Ranges
Driving time from Palmy: 46min, 40.8km,
short bit of well maintained gravel road at the end
Terrain: Reasonably flat
Track
Surface: Well graded
Hazards:
- Track
is narrow in parts and slippery after recent rain. There is a steep drop off to one side most of the way along.
- There is currently a large tree across the track but passable with
a bit of straddling.
- There is a section of track washed
out just after the intersection with a scramble up and over, this is passable but steep and slippery.
- The stream crossing after rain can be deep and fast flowing and difficult if not impossible
to cross with children - this is about 45 mins walk from the road end on the Creek Track.
- NOTE: the section of track after the stream crossing is currently washed out in a number of
places and involves 'boulder bashing' up the stream to access the mine area, not currently advisable with young children unless
the stream is very low!
Suitable for: Babies in carriers and older children with some tramping
experience.
Not suitable for young children due to steep drops and definitely not any good for prams!
Dogs:
Only hunting dogs with a permit and avian aversion trained allowed.
Comments:
Woodville
is handy for a coffee or snack after your walk.
There is a long drop located at the track start.
Coppermine
Loop Track is a 2-3hr loop starting from the same location. This track has arduous sections of slippery up and down and two
reasonably major stream/river crossings. The last section is over farmland which is very exposed and can get very strong winds.
Wouldn't recommend for younger children.
Wharite Peak Track is an almost vertical at times scramble,
for experienced trampers only!
